A small series of images for Scholastic, illustrating a version of a Japanese folkstory - it's a tale I'm very familiar with and have visited before. A fisherman catches a turtle who turns out to be the Princess of the Sea. She takes him to her watery palace where he lives for years in magnificent wealth but ultimately just longs for home... The princess allows him to return with the instructions never to open the small lacquered box she gives him. Of course, curiosity wins out, he opens the box and the years he has been away are immediately returned to him.
I based the illustrations on Japanese prints, juxtaposing high Oriental decoration with flat spaces and gradiated skies.
