This map of Hope Rock was commissioned by Thames and Hudson for inclusion in 'Archipelago', an atlas of imagined islands by a selection of international illustrators to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the publication of 'Robinson Crusoe' by Daniel Defoe. Illustrators were given free rein to create each island but they had to name it, imagine a brief history, topography, fauna and flora and give it co-ordinates.
My map was entirely hand drawn and painted. I researched the original novel and approached my Hope Rock map from the eye of a native - adding notes of local plant knowledge and local history all in the local dialect - just the kind of information Man Friday would have valued.
